Some Umbrian gems.
Author: David Cross
Description: Two nights each in Trevi and Spello and day visits to Spoleto, Assisi and Perugia. I know there are plenty of other places in Umbria to see but perhaps future trips will cover some and I will stick to the places above here, as they are the only ones I know so far.

At the end of May we found Umbria far less crowded than Tuscany but Assisi was, perhaps not surprisingly, the exception.

We took a bus up from the station to the top square of the town and walked down to the Basilica of St Francis. We only looked at the lower and older basilica and then we were happy to escape the crowds and press on to Perugia.

Trevi

Seen from the railway between Foligno and Spoletto, this village provides a splendid site, set on a hilltop HIGH above the valley. It's not yet one of the better known places although it is tyring now to attract visitors. Sadly visitors = motorists, it would seem, in the eyes of its council. There's a bus between the station and the village bu the timing takes little account of visitors. We were lucky going and very much the opposite leaving. Since the nearest taxis come from Foligno, even getting to the station costs an arm and a leg. End of complaint!

This is a wonderful village, with access by bus to Spoleto, which will be covered in a later post. The bus stops near the top of the hill in a large square and a small road leads under an arch to what must be historically the main square. Here there is a fine tower and arcades. The main delight is in simply wandering the narrow twisting roads, alleys and stair cases. Unusually the cathedral pesents no good photo opportunities except from a considerable distance.

Something very good that could easily be missed is the interior of the church of San Francesco, near the top of the town. Here is one of the world's earliest wall pump organs, that has recently been restored to a fine standard of acoustics. If you get the chance of hearing a recital, as we did, don't miss it.

Great website
OFFLINE

I mention this because, although I found it by far the most helpful website on Umbria, it seems to come way down Google's list : http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Gazetteer/Places/Europe/Italy/Umbria/map.html I did use the contact details to ask Bill Thayer one question and he was most polite, friendly and helpful with his answer. Other than this, I've never had any contact with him and recommend the site purely to help members thinking of going to Umbria.

The photo is of a historic pump organ in Trevi.
