Flying Buddha Air from Darjeeling to Kathmandu in the TINIEST plane ever over the Himalaya is a pretty interesting experience.. It was like squeezing into a tube of Colgate; doubling up like something out of Alice in Wonderland and heading directly for the back of the plane without squishing anyone on the way for the hour flight. Kathmandu was all - and more - than we had expected it to be. Throngs of people swarmed in the main tourist area, Thamel, where we took a room at the Kathmandu Guest House and set off to explore the narrow streets. Shops selling everything from silk scarves to Tibetan thankas and cushion covers; embroideries, jewellery, t-shirts, yak wool hats, elephant shaped tea-cosies, hand woven blankets, hand painted oils, purses, bowls, silver, gold and imitation North Face bags lined the streets which were teeming with people - buying, selling; driving taxis, rickshaws, bikes and mopeds - the atmosphere could not have been more vibrant, hectic and utterly different to the tranquillity of Darjeeling's hilly streets! And the restaurants, ohhh the restaurants! PIZZA was on our collective mind, and PIZZA ONLY would do. Even after just a couple of weeks of travelling our mouths were watering at the thought of a delicious feast of Italian food and that was our mission as we dodged the above mentioned people, taxis, rickshaws, bikes etc to the place that delivered the dream!
